Facebook Rules Social Media Scene In 127 Nations

In terms of social media use Facebook is unsurprisingly the king and is becoming more popular, according to data compiled by social media analyst Vincenzo Cosenza, using Alexa analytics.

Every six months Cosenza draws a global map of social networks. The latest stats, released in December 2012, show that the social-networking giant is the dominant player in 127 out of 137 countries across the globe. This means that the company has just 10 nations where it is yet to hit the top spot, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Orkut was the dominant social media platform in Brazil just 18 months ago, now Facebook has taken the lead with over one billion global users.

Compared to other continents, Asia is where Facebook has the most users – 278 million. However, its presence there pales in comparison to the local social network QZone, which has 552 million users in China alone. In South Korea, QZone is also ahead of Facebook. Local networks in Iran and Russia also beat Facebook.

Europe is the second continent after Asia where Facebook has a big foothold, with 251 million users, slightly more than the 243 million users it has in North America. The company counts 142 million users in South America and 52 million users and 15 million users in Africa and Oceania, respectively.

Since June 2012, Facebook has become the leading player in Armenia, Latvia, Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam.
