It is not surprising that social networks continue to be popular amongst UK teenagers, 82% of whom are predicted to use them at least once monthly in 2013, according to estimates from eMarketer.

However, this percentage is still lower when compared to the 18-24 age group and the 25-34 age group, where social networks usage will reach 85.6% this year, the market research firm said.

The same applies for Facebook usage, where teenagers rank third behind the 18-35-year-olds. However, 98% of the teens using social networks will use Facebook this year, compared to 96% of the 18-to-24-year-olds and 94% of the 25-to-34-year-olds.

UK teens demonstrate the highest smartphone and Internet penetration rate of 95.4%, the report showed. What’s more, the 12-17 age group will retain the leadership in this category by the end of 2013, when Internet usage will increase to almost 98%.

Twitter penetration is relatively low, with only 25.4% of teen Internet users and 31% of teen social network users. Television, on the other hand, keeps its strong place in teenagers’ lives and digital video content is gaining momentum as 85% of teenage Internet users will watch such content at least once monthly in 2013, either on a tablet, smartphone or on a personal computer. This translates into the second highest penetration rate among viewers.

eMarketer has based its estimates of teen digital and Internet activity on company releases, analysis of traffic data, mobile and Internet adoption and demographic trends.
